Athletes Helping Athletes

The opportunity to participate in the Athletes Helping Athletes program is a privilege afforded to our students by the Smithtown Central School District and the Smithtown Booster Club. With every privilege comes an inherent responsibility. Smithtown East High School takes great pride in the development, character, behavior and citizenship of the boys and girls who represent our district. Every student should aspire to continue this tradition of excellence.

Since 1984, Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) has been training and mobilizing high school student-athletes with its Student-Athlete Leadership Team Program (SALT).  Currently operating in more than 40 school districts in five counties throughout the New York metropolitan area, SALT has trained more than seven thousand high school student-athlete leaders, and reached more than half a million elementary and middle school students.

SALT trains high school student-athletes to conduct workshops for elementary and middle school students on issues ranging from self-esteem and sportsmanship to bullying & teasing and substance abuse. In these workshops, students leaders discuss making proper decisions concerning high school parties and other social settings, and talk about the power and use of language in creating social status.  The discussions are designed to be positive and proactive while raising awareness and providing options that would empower students to make the right decisions.

SALT provides all the tools for student-athlete leaders’, who work in teams, to adopt a class for the academic year. SALT training prepares the student-athlete leaders to engage and manage the classroom, conduct “ice-breaker” exercises and talk about life-skills gained through participation in extracurricular activities.  Further, each student-athlete leader is trained to relate a personal story relevant to a workshop topic that emphasizes life-skills and “real life” choices and decisions. Students are also involved in many community service projects throughout the school year as well.
